
Getting High-Speed Printing Right with Gallium Iodide
At the 2026 Printing Expo, everyone was talking about spectral precision. Specifically, Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps. We build these modules for a very simple reason: modern UV inks have specific “sweet spots” where they react best, and standard mercury lamps just miss them.
Why the light matters
Here’s the thing about GaI lamps. They hit hard in the 300-400nm range. That’s exactly where the photoinitiators in high-end inks live. By narrowing the focus of the light, we put the energy right where the ink actually cures. No more dealing with that annoying “surface cure” where the top looks dry but the bottom is still tacky to the touch. You get a deep, solid cure on non-porous materials, and you don’t end up melting your substrate in the process.
The nuts and bolts of the design
We don’t just sell you a bulb and wish you luck. These are drop-in replacements for your existing arrays, but they’re custom-built. We tweak the quartz thickness and the electrode shape so they can handle the massive current needed for fast line speeds. But there’s a catch: these lamps gethot. If your cooling isn’t up to the task, the lamp will burn out way too early or warp your materials. To stop that, we build in forced-air cooling or water-jacketed housings. It keeps everything stable, so your output doesn’t drift halfway through an eight-hour shift.
Making it work in the real world
Getting these wired up takes a bit of finesse. You need the right ballast match. We spec the transformers specifically to kill off flicker and voltage spikes—the kind of stuff that can crack the arc and ruin your day. At the expo, we showed off modules that cut curing time by 20%. That’s a huge win. It means you can crank up the conveyor speed and actually trust that the ink is sticking. Now, look—the bulbs won’t last as long as some low-intensity LEDs. That’s just the trade-off for this kind of raw power. But if you need industrial-scale throughput, this is how you get it.
