
Getting Your UV Lighting Right: A Look at Custom Gallium Iodide Lamps
Standard mercury vapor tubes are fine for some things, but they don’t always cut it. If you’re dealing with thick coatings or stubborn adhesives, you need something that can actually punch through. That’s where Gallium Iodide (GaI) comes in. It shifts the UV output toward those longer waves, letting the light penetrate deeper into the material.
The Balancing Act: Power and Heat
When we build these, we don’t just guess. We look at the irradiance levels you actually need. By tweaking the Gallium concentration and the tube diameter, we can hit that exact peak wavelength your process requires. But here is the tricky part: you have to get the voltage and wattage just right. If you try to shove too many amps through a narrow tube, the quartz walls get dangerously hot. It’s a bit of a tug-of-war. You want power, but you have to balance that against your cooling system. If you push it too far, the lamp will simply crack under the thermal stress. Not a great day for anyone.
The Hardware Side of Things
We use high-purity fused quartz because it lets the most UV light through. For our OEM partners, we keep the hardware flexible. Need a standard pinch? A specific lead-wire setup? We’ll wire it however you need so it fits your existing ballast without a headache. Sometimes, heat is a real problem for the parts you’re curing. We can add specialized coatings to the quartz to filter out the IR heat. Just a heads-up: there’s a trade-off here. You’ll get a cooler substrate, but you’ll lose a little bit of that UV punch. It’s all about what your specific project values more.
Making It Your Own
If you’re building your own brand, you don’t want to redesign your entire housing every time you change a bulb. That’s why we let you set the footprint. You give us the specs—the length, the voltage, the wattage—and we build the tubes to those exact tolerances. It makes the lamps a simple drop-in replacement for your customers. We handle the messy chemistry and the glassblowing. You handle the branding and the shipping. One last thing: double-check your power supplies. Gallium Iodide has a different strike voltage than your typical UV-C lamps. Make sure your gear can handle it before you flip the switch.
