
Dealing with Gallium Iodide Lamps in Your PCB Line
If you’ve ever struggled with photoresists or adhesives that just won’t cure deep enough, you know how frustrating it is. Standard mercury lamps are great, but they hit a wall when you’re dealing with high-density boards. That’s where our Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps come in. We basically tuned these to hit the exact wavelengths needed to trigger polymerization in those stubborn, thick-film resists. It’s about getting the light where it actually needs to go. The Technical Side (But Simplified) These lamps shift the spectrum. Because of that, they can punch through thicker layers of resist without breaking a sweat. Now, if you’re running a high-speed line, you can’t afford a “warm-up” period. You need peak power the second you flip the switch. We can crank up the wattage to give you that punch, but keep an eye on your ballast. Those high-wattage setups can cause a nasty startup surge, and the last thing you want is your power supply tripping in the middle of a run. How We Build Them We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because regular glass sucks up UV light, and we want every single photon hitting your board. One thing to watch out for: the gallium iodide filling is a bit moody about temperature. If the lamp gets too hot, the light shifts and your cure rate drops. It’s a balancing act. We’ve spent a lot of time tweaking the tube geometry so it stays cool enough to work, but intense enough to cure. Plus, they’re designed as drop-in replacements. The pins and the footprint match what you already have, so you aren’t rebuilding your whole machine just to upgrade the light. The Trade-off Here’s the honest part: these lamps runhot. Really hot. If your cooling fans are choked with dust or your conveyor is crawling, you might actually warp your PCB substrate. It’s a real risk. I always suggest keeping a close eye on the skin temperature of the boards to make sure you aren’t cooking them. We’re confident in these.
